The air in the Golden Vault was always different. It wasn't just cold; it was a dense, expensive cold, thick with the scent of chilled metal and dormant extravagance. Edgar, the keeper, felt it the clipă the access panel hissed shut behind the two men. They weren't on the Midas Cellar list. Their suits were too sharp, too tactical, and their eyes scanned the gilded walls not with awe, but with the clinical assessment of a surveyor.

"Power down Unit Two," the leader said, his voice flat. His name was Sterling, according to the faux-guest pass he’d flashed. Edgar knew it was fake. The pass didn't have the correct, microscopic watermark.

"That unit contains irreplaceable assets," Edgar stated, his submariner's calm surface-deep. "The thermal shock alone—"

"Assets are being relocated. Now."

Edgar’s hand hovered over the master panel. Unit Two held the Silicon Valley ephemera: the "quantum-locked" glacier ice for billionaires' cocktails, the cryo-preserved starter for a sourdough bread from 1849. Nonsense, but sacred nonsense. As he delayed, the second man, younger, with restless eyes, unzipped a long, thin case.

What he withdrew was not a tool Edgar recognized. It was a matte-black device, more like a thick rifle barrel with a complex series of crystalline lenses and heat sinks along its length. No visible power pack. It hummed with a frequency Edgar felt in his teeth, a sub-audible whine that made the gold leaf on the walls seem to vibrate.

"A CS-4400," Sterling said, noticing Edgar's stare. "Collimated Stimulator. Cuts cleaner than a diamond saw. Less thermal bloom. Your boss authorized its use for the… extraction."

Edgar knew he was lying. No one brought a classified industrial laser cutter, the kind whispered about in aerospace black projects, to move truffles. This was a heist. But a heist of what? You couldn't fence a gold-plated compressor.

The younger man, called Jax, planted his feet, raised the CS-4400, and took aim not at the lock, but at the center of Unit Two's golden door.

"Wait—" Edgar began.

A beam, not of blazing light, but of a concentrated, impossibly bright white line, thinner than a needle, lanced from the device. There was no dramatic pew. Instead, a sound like the universe tearing a sheet of paper—a high-pitched, localized riiiip that seared the air. Where it struck the gold plating, the metal did not melt and flow. It disappeared, vaporized into an aerosol so fine it hung in the air as a sparkling, bitter mist. The beam punched through the gold, through the underlying stainless steel, through the dense polyurethane insulation, in the time it takes to blink.

Jax moved the beam with surgical precision, tracing a perfect, smoking rectangle. The smell was acrid, alien—ozone, vaporized precious metal, and the burnt-plastic stench of annihilated insulation.

The partea interioară cold of the unit, the precious, precisely maintained 34°F, met the beam’s residual heat and the room’s ambient warmth with a violent gasp. A plume of frost-white vapor exploded from the cut line, billowing into the room in a chaotic exhalation. Alarms, silent in the soundproofed vault, flashed on Edgar's panel: temperature critical, integrity breached.

Sterling stepped forward, donned an insulated glove, and kicked the cut section. The golden rectangle fell inward with a muffled, heavy thud onto the racks inside. The vapor cleared, revealing the interior.

It wasn't just gourmet curiosities. Pushed to the back, behind the racks of absurdities, were six sleek, gunmetal-gray cylinders, each the size of a thermos, secured with magnetic clamps. They bore no labels, only a series of alphanumeric codes. Condensation was already beading on their cold surfaces.

So that was it. Midas Cellar was the perfect front. The ultimate secure cold chain for something that needed to be kept not just cold, but invisible, amid a circus of opulence. Biological samples? Cryptographic keys stored at near-absolute zero? Something worse?

Sterling began removing the cylinders, placing them in a shielded case. Jax kept the CS-4400 trained on Edgar, its emitter still glowing with a malevolent, cherry-red afterglow.

As Sterling worked, the environmental chaos unfolded. The other units, stressed by the system imbalance, began to groan. A delicate chime sounded as a rack in Unit Three, holding the Countess's truffles, sagged from a sudden temperature shift. The pristine ecosystem of the Golden Vault was dying.

The last cylinder secured, Sterling nodded to Jax. They backed toward the door, the
